Nu grönskar det och blommorna doftar. Sommaren är här. Den här tiden på året är nätterna ljusa även om Älvsbyn ligger söder om polcirkeln. Officiellt går solen idag ner strax innan midnatt och upp cirka kvart över ett på natten i Älvsbyn. Natten är just nu alltså lite mer än 1 timme. Vid sommarsolståndet om drygt en vecka är längden på natten nere på cirka en halvtimme då solen går ner en kort stund mellan midnatt och klockan ett på natten. Sen vänder det och blir mörkare igen…
Now everything is green and the air is full of the scent of flowers. Summer is here. This time of year we have daylight all night even though Älvsbyn is located south of the Polar Circle. Today the sun officially sets shortly before midnight and rises again at about a quarter past one at night in Älvsbyn. This mean that currently the night is slightly more than 1 hour. At the summer solstice in a couple of weeks the length of the night is down to about half an hour when the sun drops below the horizon for a short while between midnight and one o’clock at night. Then it turns and slowly gets darker again…
Björkens pollensäsong är nästan över här uppe. Fyrkantskommunerna Älvsbyn, Boden, Luleå och Piteå turas om att mäta pollennivåerna och i år är det Bodens tur att sköta pollenmätningen. Nu är nivåerna åter låga för björkpollen så snart borde jag kunna sluta ta min allergimedicin.
The birch pollen season is almost over up here in the north. The four neighbouring towns Älvsbyn, Boden, Luleå and Piteå take turns measuring the pollen levels and this year it’s Boden’s turn. Now the level of birch pollen in the air is low again (birch is red in the graph below, alder is blue and willows are yellow) so soon I should be able to stop taking my allergy medicine.
Nu när pollineringen är avklarad har honhängena bytt riktning från att peka uppåt till att hänga ner.
Now, after the pollination period, the female catkins have switched direction from pointing upwards to hanging down.
Vårtbjörken har spetsigare blad än sin släkting glasbjörken.
The Silver Birch (Betula pendula) has more pointed leaves than its relative the Downy Birch (B. pubescens).
Skägglavarna på stammen var väldigt torra och hårda idag.
The bearded lichens (Usnea sp.) on the stem were very dry and hard today.

Framför kyrkan står en rad med flikbladiga Ornäsbjörkar, uppkallade efter en berömd björk som växte på gården Lilla Ornäs i Dalarna på 1700- och 1800-talen.
In front of the church there is a row of birches with lobed leaves known as Ornäs Birches in Sweden. The name comes from a famous birch that grew on the Little Ornäs farm in the Dalarna region of Sweden in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Some love it from the first moment, but many that haven’t grown up in the far north have a hard time adapting to the extreme light and climate conditions. Although most initially fear the dark and cold winters it’s actually the bright summer nights that usually make them brake down and move back south again because they just cannot sleep when it’s daylight all the time. After all, even the thickest black curtains will never completely block out all daylight.
I grew up in the north so I have no problem sleeping even if the sun is shining. I actually prefer that since for me black nights in the middle of summer feels confusing and uncomfortable – like winter and summer have somehow become mixed up…
Fascinating snippets of information this time!
The tree is magnificent against the blue sky and I love the lichen, aphid (we call them greenfly) and Ornas birch – I wouldn’t have recognised that as a birch.
Although I hate the dark winters, I don’t think I would like such short nights in summer, either.

I envy your unending daylight right now. One summer I spent 10 weeks in Alaska, and I had no problem ”adjusting” to no darkness. I didn’t miss it at all.
